Spring Into Action: Fresh Starts for Your Body and Mind

A cyclist stretches beside a green bike in a lush countryside scene, with rolling hills and a flowing river adorned with daffodils.

As the daffodils push through and the days grow longer, spring reminds us that fresh starts aren’t just for gardens, they’re for our bodies too. Whether you’re dusting off your running shoes, tackling that spring clean, or simply feeling inspired by the season of renewal, now is the perfect time to give your body the attention it deserves.

In this edition, we’re sharing three osteopathic tips to help you embrace spring with energy, vitality, and, most importantly, injury free!

1. Spring cleaning without the strain

It’s tempting to blitz through the house in one weekend, but your back won’t thank you! Break tasks into manageable chunks and vary your activities to avoid repetitive strain. When lifting boxes or moving furniture, remember to bend at the knees and keep heavy items close to your body. If you haven’t moved that much all winter, consider booking in with us beforehand to ensure your body is ready for action.

Osteo tip: Alternate between high and low tasks to avoid prolonged bending or reaching overhead.

2. Restarting your exercise routine

Spring motivation is wonderful, but jumping back into exercise too quickly can lead to injury. Whether taking up jogging, going hiking or dusting off your bicycle, start gently and build up gradually. Your body needs time to adapt after the slower winter months. Consider a pre-activity osteopathic check-up to identify any areas of tightness or weakness that could benefit from attention.

Osteo tip: Always warm up properly, cold muscles are more prone to injury.

3. Garden smarter, not harder

Spring for many people means getting back outdoors and into the garden. Prolonged kneeling, digging, and bending can cause problems for knees, backs, and shoulders. Use a kneeling pad or stool, take regular breaks, and consider using long-handled tools to reduce strain. Remember, gardening is a marathon, not a sprint, pace yourself!

Osteo tip: Stretch your hamstrings, lower back, and shoulders before and after gardening sessions and think about taking an Epsom salt bath.
